Boris Johnson has resigned as Foreign Secretary as the political earthquake erupts over the Prime Minister’ s Soft Brexit Plans. He follows on from Brexit Secretary David Davis who resigned earlier in the day along with two junior ministers. Johnson accused the plans of leaving the UK as a colony of the EU and stating the Brexit dream had died.
According to earlier reports that came in Conservative MP’s were en masse signing letters to be sent to Graham Brady the Chairman of the 1922 committee of the Tory Party. 48 letters are needed for a leadership challenge to be triggered.
However it appears that the letter to May are not materialising and that Rees-Mogg himself has called off the attack dogs according to respected political insider Iain Watson of the BBC:
It was also reported that at the end of the meeting, by the respected international news agency Reuters, that May left the meeting of the Parliamentary group to cheers and applause! The big worry for Brexit supporters is that they can get the 48 letters but not the 150 mp’s they would need in a leadership contest against her.
David Clews, Spokesperson for UK Unity, the grassroots campaign to leave the EU has said: “Despite all the talk of principles and sticking up for the vote to leave the EU, Boris Johnson, David Davis, Michael Gove, Liam Fox etc have all been taken for MUGS by the remainer- in- chief Theresa May. They are now resigning en masse but we fear it may be too late. If the coupe to replace May is unsuccessful then Brexit is DOOMED! It appears the Tories are always putting party ahead of Country and anything they do is out of fear of putting Corbyn into Number 10. They will be punished for the betrayal!”
The letters are only announced if 48 are received but the concern is that parliamentary party will vote to keep May in charge and the zero Brexit she has announced will be pushed through.
UPDATE- Jacob Rees Mogg just confirmed on Channel 4 News Live he has NOT submitted a letter demanding a leadership contest! It also appears they still think concessions can be got from the Government or that Brussels will REJECT the agreeement.
