Britain is in the final straight, Boris is a nose ahead but he is only a poor final hurdle away from dismal failure. In Perth and North Perthshire the SNP has a majority of just 21, also in Dudley North, in the Midlands, an Independent Ian Austin (who resigned from Labour earlier this year) has a majority of just 22. Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire is another marginal where Labour has a tiny majority of 30. Labour have won there for a century but its majority has been reducing. In Southampton Itchen the Conservatives have a majority of just 31 as the Brexiteer MP Royston Smith is hoping to increase his majority.
In the north-west of England, there are 9 seats that could fall to the Conservatives on a swing of just 5 per cent. One of these is Crewe and Nantwich where Labour is defending a majority of just 48 votes. Given the fact Crewe voted Brexit, this could be very winnable for the Tories. In the former Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron’s constituency of Westmorland and Lonsdale, needs a swing of just 0.8 per cent for the Conservatives to win, in another seat that voted Brexit. In Bolton West and Pendle which are both Conservative-held seats remain forces are advocating tactical voting in order to win in these marginals.
In Wales, Labour has dominated the political landscape for decades. However, they are most vulnerable is Wrexham, where Labour is defending a majority of 1,832 and in a recent poll, it was suggested the Conservative take that seat from Labour, who have had the seat since 1935. In Scotland, the Liberal Democrat leader, Jo Swinson, faces her own battle in East Dunbartonshire, which she reclaimed for her party in 2017. The Conservatives hope to keep hold of Stirling after a narrow win there two years ago.
