The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has criticised the Government for what he has called “shameful and wrong” to cut to the foreign aid budget. The Chancellor Rishi Sunak yesterday announced that the overseas aid budget will be cut to 0.5% of GDP in 2021 but did add that it was his Government’s “intention” was to return to 0.7% whenever the fiscal situation allows.
This decision was slammed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who took to twitter to offer his thoughts. He tweeted: “The cut in the aid budget – made worse by no set date for restoration – is shameful and wrong. It’s contrary to numerous Government promises and its manifesto. I join others in urging MPs to reject it for the good of the poorest, and the UK’s own reputation and interest”.
The chief executive of Oxfam Danny Sriskandarajah said on this decision: “Cutting the UK’s lifeline to the world’s poorest communities in the midst of a global pandemic will lead to tens of thousands of otherwise preventable deaths”.
However, snap YouGov polling conducted after the announcement showed widespread public support from across the political spectrum for the cut in foreign aid announced yesterday. Nigel Farage reacted with fury to David Cameron’s criticisms. He said: “Did you ever explain to us why our foreign aid budget sends money to China and India whilst propping up corrupt regimes around the world? Perhaps that is not necessary at Notting Hill dinner parties. 66% of Brits want foreign aid cut”.
