The BBC have stated that “times have changed” as it has removed Matt Lucas’ and David Walliams Little Britain comedy sketch show from its BBC iPlayer archive streaming service. Little Britain was removed due to concerns about the use of blackface by its two stars, David Walliams and Matt Lucas, who between them play every character in the show. The comedy show was first aired on BBC Three in 2003.
Little Britain has long been controversial, with both creators admitting that the show could not be created now for fear of upsetting too many people. A spokesperson for the BBC has said : “There’s a lot of historical programming available on BBC iPlayer, which we regularly review. Times have changed since Little Britain first aired so it is not currently available on BBC iPlayer”.
BritBox is the the streaming service which is a collaboration between the BBC and ITV and has also removed the show, saying : “Times have changed since Little Britain first aired, so it is not currently available on BritBox. Come Fly With Me has not been available on the service for six months.”
The Conservative commentator and passionate Brexiteer Darren Grimes has said “The BBC, in deleting Little Britain, has implied that the millions of us that used to watch it are bigoted racists that should be ashamed. The BBC, clearly the propaganda arm of these protestors, needs to stop using our own money to tell us what comedy we can and cannot consume”.
David Walliams or Matt Lucas have yet to publicly comment on these developments.
