Today the BBC’s executive complaints unit (ECU) has upheld a complaint made about Naga Munchetty, the unit has concluded that labelling Donald Trump as ‘racist’ has broken BBC rules.
Naga Munchetty hosts the BBC breakfast programme on BBC1, and Ms Munchetty stated on air that she felt that Mr Trump’s comments on Democrat congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley were embedded in racism.
Ms Munchetty stated on air “Every time I have been told, as a woman of colour, to go back to where I came from. Now, I’m not accusing anyone of anything here, but you know what certain phrases mean”.
However, spokeswoman from the BBC has said “The ECU ruled that while Ms Munchetty was entitled to give a personal response to the phrase ‘go back to your own country’ as it was rooted in
her own experience, overall her comments went beyond what the guidelines allow for.” This is not even the first time this week that the BBC has had to rule on one of its employee’s.
Only yesterday the BBC was forced to condemn Emily Maitlis for her treatment of Rod Liddle on Newsnight earlier in the way. The BBC stated that Ms Maitlis had been too “persistent and personal” towards Mr Little on the programme aired on the 15 th of July, sparking fury from viewers who felt she had failed to be even handed. The report also said “it was insufficiently clear that this was not Ms Maitlis’s view of Mr Liddle but that of his critics, and the persistent and personal nature of the criticism risked leaving her open to the charge that she had failed to be even-handed between the two guests”.
Ms Maitlis also came under fire for her handling of the Conservative leadership debate in June, where she appeared to partake in personal debates with eventual winner and current PM
Boris Johnson.
