It has emerged that the controversial Black Boy Lane, in London, is set to be renamed as councillors are set to spend £186,000 of taxpayers’ cash to rename the 300-year-old LAne. Haringey Council, which is Labour-run have decided to change the name of the road after last years Black Lives Matter protests.
UNN’s Oliver Down understands that Haringey Council will provide a ‘voluntary’ £300 payment to the 183 homes on the road. £50,000 will also be spent on a salary for a support and administration officer. Other costs will be incurred on things such as replacing signage and the project will cost an estimated £186,000.
Sharon David is 55, is a black woman and has lived on Black Boy Lane for over 40 years. She has said: ‘No one has said anything about the name before. Why all of a sudden now because of the Black Lives Matter movement? Changing a street name is not the answer. The money could literally be donated to fight actual racism’.
Eldridge Culverwell has called the move ‘short-sighted’. She said: ‘They say Black Boy Lane has racist connotations, but I grew up in racist South Africa and this is rubbish’. Councillor Joseph Ejiofor is the leader of Haringey Council and has defended this proposal by saying it ‘seeks to ensure that our monuments, building, place and street names are reflective of our values, and the culture and diversity… in our borough’.
