The Home Secretary Priti Patel has welcomed the United Kingdom’s return to the iconic blue used by the nations passport holders before the UK joined the European Economic Community, that later morphed into the European Union.
British passports will return to the original blue colour for the first time since 1988, the change is set to come into effect next month (March 2020), when HM’s government will issue the first blue passports since the Brexit vote.
The blue passport was first introduced in 1921 and remained in use until the United Kingdom joined the EEC. The colour changed to burgundy 32 years ago.
The passports back cover will also feature new symbolic design with the floral emblems of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales representing each region of the United Kingdom respectively.
Praising the return to the blue passports Home Secretary Patel said: “Leaving the European Union gave us a unique opportunity to restore our national identity and forge a new path in the world,
“By returning to the iconic blue and gold design, the British passport will once again be entwined with our national identity and I cannot wait to travel on one.”
The new blue passports will also contain what the government called a “hard-wearing polycarbonate data page” that it promised would keep personal data secure. They will be 34 pages long. A so-called jumbo version for frequent travellers will contain 54 pages.
The government has released Interesting information for anyone wanting to get their hands on the new passport, on the gov.uk website a statement reads: “The new blue passport design will start being issued from early 2020.
“Blue passports will be phased in over a number of months. If you renew your passport during this initial period, you may be issued with either a blue or a burgundy British passport. You will not be able to choose whether you get a burgundy or a blue passport. All styles of passport will be equally valid for travel.
“All British passports issued from mid-2020 will be blue.”
