We have received the following response from the BBC complaints division:
Dear Mr Clews,
Thank you for contacting the BBC.
We would not agree that this aspect of investigative journalism is against any principles or the Charter. When there is a public interest, and no other way of obtaining the information at hand, our guidelines allow for undercover work such as this:
https://www.bbc.com/ editorialguidelines/ guidelines/fairness/ guidelines/#deception
“The public interest is also served in exposing or detecting crime or significantly anti-social behaviour and by exposing corruption, injustice, significant incompetence or negligence.”
Rather than misleading an audience with such content, we are getting to the heart of stories and revealing issues which would otherwise remain hidden.
Thank you once more for getting in touch.
Kind regards,BBC Complaints Team
