Universities in Britain are set to test a new online teaching link for international students in China. This link will require all course materials to comply with the Chinese government’s regulations on the internet.
This will enable students in China that wish to keep studying at UK universities to do so. However, this will be subject to students only accessing materials on an “allowed” list. The body Universities UK has said that it was “not aware of any instances when course content has been altered” and the body was insistent that move was not accepting “censorship”.
The pilot project currently involves four ‘Russell Group’ universities – King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, York and Southampton and is being run by JISC which was formerly the Joint Information Systems Committee.
China’s internet censorship rules are likely to mean that some websites are filtered or blocked which could mean Chinese students not being able to view an embedded link in a scholarly article for example.
The current pilot schemes technical solution is being provided free by the Chinese internet firm Alibaba Cloud which will create a virtual connection between the student in China and the online network of the UK university.
