Carer JAILED for horrendous sexual abuse of a vulnerable man

A ‘carer’ has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a vulnerable man he was supposed to be caring for. Mr Mohammed Bari carried out a campaign of horrendous abused in South Essex. Mr Bari who is 22, secured the employment of the man who was 65 in 2016.  The victim suffered from dementia and depression. 

Mr Bari was accused of consistently abusing the mean in his own home, which involved, on at least two occasions, forcing the vulnerable man to perform degrading sex acts on him. Mr Bari’s victim eventually told another carer about what was happening in 2017 and Bari was suspended and later charged with sexual activity with a person suffering from a mental disorder.

Earlier this year, following a trial at Basildon Crown Court, a jury convicted Bari by a majority verdict of two counts but acquitted him of one other. The victim has subsequently died. Due to the coronavirus situation, Mr Bari appeared by video link at Chelmsford Crown court.  Judge Samantha Cohen said “You stayed overnight in his home. You had authority over him as a parent would over a child. Your employment placed you in a position of trust. You abused that trust in the most grotesque fashion. You said what you were doing would help him relax”.

Judge Cohen also stated: “Having heard it and seen his victim statement I am satisfied you sexually assaulted him on many occasions. The jury convicted you on two occasions, but I am satisfied it was many more than that”.

When passing down the sentence of twelve years in prison Judge Cohen reasoned: “Your offending is hard to comprehend. You did not, and do not suffer from any mental illness”. In addition to the sentence Mr Bari will serve at least two years on licence following his release.
