China has spent the last couple of weeks attempting to restore its global image after being accused of lying to the world about the seriousness of its coronavirus outbreak. However, even these attempts but at humanitarianism and diplomacy have not turned very well. As a result of COVID-19 decimating Italy and in particular, the country’s significant elderly population, China told the world, in a grand statement that it would donate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to help Italy stop its spread.
However, subsequent reports indicated that China actually sold, not donated, the PPE to Italy. A senior source inside the Donald Trump US administration has told The Spectator USA that the situation is even darker than that. The source states that China forced Italy to buy back the PPE supply that it gave to China in response to the initial coronavirus outbreak. The source said “before the virus hit Europe, Italy sent tons of PPE to China to help China protect its own population. China then has sent Italian PPE back to Italy — some of it, not even all of it … and charged them for it”.
This news, of China taking advantage of Italy’s generosity is just the latest example in a string of disastrous diplomacy in the wake of the pandemic. Supplies and the crucial testing kits China has sold to other countries have turned out to be defective. One example of this was that Spain had to return 50,000 quick-testing kits to China after discovering that they were faulty. In other cases, instead of apologising or fixing any issues, as reported in the business insider, China has passed the buck onto others. In response to the Dutch government complaining that half of the masks that China sent did not meet safety standards China told the Netherlands to “double-check the instructions”.
