Last week the British government stated that it had ordered millions of coronavirus testing kits, SUBJECT TO THEM WORKING. Guess what, it has now emerged that the tests the government were talking about were made in China and do not work. All of this has been admitted by PHE’s Professor John Newton. Professor Newton is the government’s new testing chief and has said that some of the Chinese tests could identify immunity in those who had been very sick however, all of the tests had failed the minimum threshold set out the outset of the trials.
Professor Newton was reported in the Times saying “The test developed in China was validated against patients who were severely ill with a very large viral load, generating a large amount of antibodies… whereas we want to use the test in the context of a wider range of levels of infection including people who are quite mildly infected. So, for our purposes, we need a test that performs better than some of these other tests”.
This is not the first time that Chinese made coronavirus tests have proven faulty. Towards the end of March Spain, the country with the second-highest number of fatalities worldwide and the highest number of cases in Europe, bought thousands of faulty antibody testing kits from China’s Shenzhen Bioeasy Biotechnology. Turkey also found some Chinese testing kits not to be up to standard.
Only last week the Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage expressed fury that the UK was buying ventilators from China. 300 were sent to the NHS last week. Former Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith went even further when he said: “China shouldn’t be charging for this stuff. Why are they making money out of COVID-19 when it started in China? They shouldn’t be deriving any significant benefit at all.”
