England’s Chief Medical officer Chris Whitty has called on Boris Johnson to keep social distancing measures in place for a further year. Mr Whitty has also stoked fears of an impending third wave of Covid infections.
Yesterday at a Downing Street press conference the Prime Minister confirmed that from Monday the 12th of April, hairdressers and pub beer gardens will reopen in and also stated he plans to stick “like glue” to his roadmap for easing restrictions.
These words of optimism from Prime Minister Johnson came despite his scientific advisers including Mr Whitty warning that completely lifting restrictions could trigger a dangerous new wave of Covid infections, that would be similar to that seen during spring 2020.
The Prime Minister has said that there is currently “nothing” in the data to make him think he would have to “deviate” from his stated plan of scrapping all restrictions from June 21 at the earliest. However, one senior Government figure has stated that there is an increasingly live debate between the PM, Professor Whitty and the Government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance on how transmission can be kept under control.
The senior Government figure has said told Sky News: “He wants to get life back to normal. So, he’s prepared to go for the certification and do it for livelihoods. If you allow pubs and restaurants to reopen at 40 percent capacity, they’ll go bust anyway, so part of the debate behind closed doors is whether to drop social distancing in return for passports. That’s part of the battle now”.
