In a shocking yet unsurprising court case this week, Mr Kevin Taylor, 28, was found guilty of three cases of making and one count of being in possession of indecent images of children. Mr Taylor was spared prison and was only handed a three-year community order as a result of an apology made in the pre-sentencing report submitted to the judge.
Mr Taylor had downloaded nearly 30 indecent images and videos of children that the authorities are aware of. These were stored in two subfolders, one named “incest”, and another named “wrong”. Kevin Taylor’s initial angle of defence, as reported by the Liverpool Echo, was that he did not know that the clips were on his personal computer. Despite this the prosecutor on the case Ms Sarah Holt stated that software was used to clean the computer on several occasions to remove files between 2013 and 2017.
The Judge on this particular case Robert Warnock summing up the case said: “It stands you in good stead that you have some insight into the fact that possession of these images promotes child abuse. I take into account the timescale, it was some time ago now, and I’ve taken into account what you’ve said in the pre-sentence report. If there had not been a degree of insight and remorse in this case, it’s almost certain that I would put you into custody. These images are children being abused. You might not have fully realised that, but you must have begun to realise it when you saw in particular the Category A images to which the Crown have just referred.”
Kevin Taylor had no previous convictions and was currently unemployed prior to the trial and is in receipt of state benefits. Mr Taylor was ordered to attend 31 sessions of a sex offenders treatment programme, as well as having to sign onto the Sex offenders register.
This case is similar to many uncovered this year alone. One example of this was former police officer Lee Kelly who was found in possession of over 1,000 indecent images, who was given a suspended sentence due to his previous “good work” for the service. However, Judge Warnock did warn Taylor that if he defaulted on any of his orders, he would look the send him to prison at that point.
