Recently I received a notice from Ebay warning me not to attempt to sell products for inflated prices to combat the COVID19 virus. Being the inquisitive type I immediately did a search on Ebay for things that might be of interest to those wishing to guard against the virus. Within ten seconds the results were surprising.
Yes, this is a small bottle of hand gel that you could buy for pennies being sold for £9.50 – at least the postage is free!
More surprising still is that people are actually buying at these prices.
This type of behaviour, both the price inflation and the fact that people are buying these products like crazy despite the prices, smells like hysteria. Hysteria is not good, people in a heightened state of stress and emotion do not make rational decisions.
My ‘job’ on UNN is not to do news as that is more than adequately done by others who do it better than me. My function is to explain, de-mystify and calm hysteria – I plan to do just that.
There is no doubt that hand hygiene is by far the most important factor in preventing the spread of disease, this is a basic infection control fact. So hand sanitiser is a very useful tool in protecting yourself from infection but you do not have to run up an overdraft to keep your hands clean.
First, the coronavirus is a lipid bound virus, this means that in the most basic terms it has a microscopic layer of fats encapsulating it. Ordinary soap breaks down fat as we know so a good hot hand wash with soap or washing up liquid will not only remove the virus from your hands but also destroy it by breaking down its outer casing.
Second, hand gels are easy to make yourself and you never ever need to run out or pay extortionate prices for it. I have two recipes you can use, one is simple, one slightly more complex.
Recipe 1.
You will need.
A pump dispensing bottle (this can be an old soap dispenser or cosmetic dispenser as long as its rinsed properly)
Glycerine (available from any chemist)
Surgical spirit (available from any chemist) OR Vodka (yes seriously),
Method.
Fill the bottle three quarters full (if using vodka) or half full (if using surgical spirit) of the alcohol, then add two tablespoons of glycerine then top up with tap water. Shake thoroughly to mix. You now have an alcohol solution that will disinfect your hands without drying the skin.
Recipe 2. **This requires careful handling of substances – caution required**.
You will need.
Any sealed container that can hold 2.5 litres (large fizzy drink bottle will do – but it *must* be labelled)
A foaming dispenser (just type ‘foaming soap dispenser’ into Ebay) – these are very cheap.
BAC50 – Available from EBAY. You’ll only need a small bottle £12.99 for 250ml bottle was the best price I found on Ebay. You can buy bigger amounts if you wish. This will be enough to make 125 litres of handwash solution.
Method.
BAC50 undiluted is DANGEROUS – so proceed with caution, use rubber gloves.
Fill the plastic container with 2.5 litres of clean tap water.
Add 1 teaspoon (5ml) of BAC50
Close the container and shake to mix.
Any spills of the neat BAC50 must be cleaned up with water and washed away – WEAR GLOVES.
The diluted solution can now be used to fill and refill your foaming dispenser, this is the same foam that they use in hospitals.
Do not in any circumstances use the BAC50 neat – it is an industrial strength antibacterial so *MUST BE DILUTED*. Remember to label everything very clearly and keep these materials away from children.
So for £12.99 you can make 125 litres of handwash foam. If you compare that with 60ml for £9.50 then the above method is 10.4pence per litre and the Ebay seller is charging £158.33 a litre – for the same thing.
I hate it when people use a crisis to profit, I will be presenting more methods and tactics to protect yourself and your family if things get worse. My purpose is not to spread fear but to find solutions and techniques to stay safe.
