British pubs are part of the backbone of local communities of our country. Everyone has their favourite pub, or there local. Perhaps it is the first pub you had that first pint in at 18 or perhaps the place you discovered your limit of what constituted sensible alcohol consumption. Many of our favourite things happen in a pub that doesn’t involve alcohol, karaoke, quizzes, the roaring fire and the reasonably priced ham, egg and chips. The average Brit has had a special moment in a pub.
In rural areas pubs literally are public houses and are a place for so many to escape social isolation. In many villages across the UK, the pub can be the only community hub for miles around. We know, like virtually every industry, Covid- 19 is having a devastating impact on the pub trade. No one blames the government for locking down pubs in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus. There is, of course, an unprecedented level of direct support available to businesses to help them and their staff, from direct grants and loans underwritten by the government as well as the employment retention scheme ‘furlough’. In addition to this, the government has recognised the importance of the pub specifically, by giving them the flexibility to remain open as a takeaway and delivery service.
Comforting stories are emerging of pubs being extremely innovative, in accordance with the safety guidelines. UNN makes no attempt to sugar-coat the reality pubs are facing. Eventually, Britain will beat this virus. I know where I’ll be heading the moment we do beat the virus: the pub. To every pub landlord up and down the country struggling through as best they can, UNN salutes you. Britain needs you and Britain loves you.
