After the Justice Ministry said up to 4,000 inmates would be freed but so far only 57 have been released, around 2,000 tags bought for UK Covid-19 prisoner releases remain unused.
The MP for Tottenham and Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice David Lammy has complained that the Government has so far only realised ‘55’prisoners.
Taking to Twitter Mr Lammy wrote: “Why has the government ordered 2,000 electronic tags for its early release scheme when it has only released 55 extra prisoners?
“The MoJ has barely acted on the early release measures it previously said were necessary to protect the NHS and save lives.”
He later followed this up by saying: “Labour wants the government to succeed in stopping prisons from becoming Covid-19 hotspots. It should publish the scientific advice that supports its sudden change in strategy.”

Replying to Mr Lammy’s comments was a user by the name of Sammni who wrote: “So the daft racist Lammy wants to release lots of prisoners.
“Like thieves. People convicted of assault and I’m sure a lot worse.
“They chose to do the crime they can go to jail and stay there until their time is done”.
Another wrote: “You are purely acting in self-interest as usual. Which one of your friends is in jail and why must we compromise public safety with early release?”
Brian Bassett responded slamming the Labour party, he wrote: “You do realise, the game changes by the hour, so you have to change with it, not something labour understand, your lot would still be having meetings on how to tackle the problem.”
The Ministry of Justice announced on 4 April that up to 4,000 prisoners who were within two months of their release date and had passed a risk assessment would be freed. As of 12 May, the figure stood at 57.
