With the 31 st October fast approaching, and still no signs of a deal being agreed, the likelihood of a No-Deal scenario is becoming more and more likely. EU officials in Brussels still seem unwilling to tackle the key issues surrounding the reasons former PM Theresa May’s three times failed bid to push through a deal was comprehensively rejected by
MP’s from all sides of parliament.
Because of this, PM Boris Johnson’s self-proclaimed ‘War Cabinet’ have doubled down on their efforts to remove and/or amend key parts of the potential deal, with the withdrawal agreement
providing a major headache for future relationships between the UK and the EU. With Boris Johnson showing no signs of buckling under pressure, the fiasco that we call Brexit is set
to go down to the wire.
Because a No-Deal Brexit now seems inevitable, a cross party group named @Peoples Parliament’ has been formed to try and stop what MP’s involved have called a catastrophic crash out of the EU. Labour Leader and accused fence sitter Jeremy Corbyn has joined forces with Remain party leaders Jo Swinson (LibDems) and Ian Blackford (SNP) to form an alliance and stop a No-Deal scenario being implemented. The for-mentioned leaders have been joined by former Greens co-leader Caroline Lucas, Plaid Cymru leader and a host of high profile remain MP’s.
MP’s take to Twitter to voice their opinions and concerns.
With accusation after accusation landing at the door of Number 10, the fallout of this bold move by pro-remain MP’s to thwart Brexit has been met with fierce backlash.
Article 50 was triggered on the premise that the UK would leave the EU deal or no-deal. With no- deal being the default position if a deal could not be reached. 498 MP’s voted in favour of triggering A50, with 114 in opposition.
The LibDems, SNP and Plaid Cymru have always spoken openly about their desire to reverse the decision of the referendum in 2016. Labour however campaigned on a manifesto to Leave the
European Union, and have since backtracked on that promise. This has led to major division within the party. A once euro-sceptic Jeremy Corbyn now backing a peoples vote.
With faith in parliament at an all-time low, and division parties and the electorate at an all-time high, it is hard to see a way out of this mess. The Brexit pantomime will surely rumble on for years, irrespective of the final October 31 st outcome.
