The once respectable Metro has run a story stating that British Muslims have started to leave the UK in mass following Boris Johnson’s election victory. The journalist Basit Mahmood crafted the piece accompanied by alarmist headlines but has seemingly failed to offer hard evidence of the claim. The Metro is free and available on public transport. Basit Mahmood claims that British Muslims “have started the process of leaving the UK over fears for their ‘personal safety’ now Boris Johnson is Prime Minister for five years”. The article only mentions discussions between the Metro and two people both of whom have not fled Britain.
The article mentions Manzoor Ali who is a Muslim charity boss who delivers food parcels in Manchester. Mr Ali has previously labelled Prime Minister Johnson “nothing but a liar, a conman and a racist” who has “lied to this country time and time again”, “offended Muslims”, and “lied to this nation for votes to leave [the European Union]” In this article, Mr Ali tells the Metro he is now “scared for [his] personal safety [and] children’s future”.
As the Metro describes it, “his family are in agreement that they should move to ensure their safety” but it seems there have been no concrete steps towards actually realising that goal. Breitbart is this evening reporting that Mr Ali is not considering a move to a majority-Muslim country, but instead New Zealand, which “appealed to him, given the humane and compassionate manner in which the prime minister of the country, Jacinda Ardern handled the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque shootings”.
The only other person the Metro interviewed for the article was Eidan. Eidan’s Twitter handle is @eidansal and the account tweeted “oh Jeremy Corbyn, Oh Jeremy Corbyn he is always going to be my prime minister! #notmygovernment #Corbynistas”. Beyond these two individuals, the original journalist Basit Mahmood does not provide any hard evidence for the claim that “A number of British Muslims have begun to leave the UK after Boris Johnson won the election”. This is the standard of the MSM journalism we see today.
