Don’t let them Gaslight you!

If you’ve never heard of the term ‘gaslighting’ then it’s time you did because it’s being done to you right now by the mainstream media and what I will tentatively label ‘the government’ – a description barely applicable to the gaggle of amateurs we have in Westminster, but more of that later.

If you ask google to define gaslighting then you’ll get this response ‘manipulate (someone) by psychological means into doubting their own sanity’.

This is a terse but accurate definition of what is going on at this very time.  We are being asked to decimate our economy and our ongoing wellbeing to defeat a phantom menace that we are told could have killed 500,000 people had the lockdown not been invoked. Problematically this is simply counterfactual. The computer model used to arrive at that estimate has been proven to be not only flawed but intrinsically useless. Even the heavily massaged statistics show that the death toll from this event will be no more than 50,000 so this figure is out by a factor of 10.

Imagine being able to earn a six figure salary for being wrong by a factor that large. ‘How fast is that car going officer?… 6 miles per hour… it’s fine… oh no – it’s 60!!’ SPLAT.

Imagine being a stockbroker but not being able to differentiate between 100 or 1000…

Imagine being a doctor and administering 100milligrams of a drug instead of 10…

And yet we are supposed to tolerate this level of error from a government that has the power to shut down our businesses, control where and when we go and with whom, cancel our vital outpatients services, close the schools and cripple the economy.

With every passing day the rhetoric from the government begins to look more and more like a bizarre homily designed to engineer compliance using fear and legislation that was written into the statute books on the back of global panic and now disproven projections.  

Every serious statistical analysis shows the government numbers are simply gibberish and yet we’re meant to sit and consume their condescending nonsense like it was handed down on a tablet of stone. 

I’m sorry but this has got to stop and the only way it will is if enough people start calling out their elected MPs with some fairly strong language. We’ve seen the response to the demonstration in Hyde Park which was smeared by the mainstream press as being a construct of the far right. I am afraid the propaganda has been effective in mobilising the weak minded and mentally pliable into being the useful idiots applauding their own impoverishment and shouting down sceptics.

Our right to assemble on the street has been withdrawn and it is clear that there is a willing army of unquestioning drones who will drag you off into a police van for even daring to want to express your opinion in this way. Luckily the post is still working and I implore everyone reading this to put pen to paper and let their MP know how you feel.

Remember the average constituency backbench MP gets little more information than us, they may have submitted to the same poisonous groupthink and fearmongering as many of the population so might be dismissive or incredulous that you are daring to challenge the consensus, so be polite – state your case, tell them about the economic carnage in your locality, tell them that you will not tolerate the imposition of these draconian measures.

The disturbing video of James Delingpole being quizzed by a policeman barely old enough to shave and asked to produce his press credentials was proof if it were needed that society is being reconfigured under our noses. It seems as if we are to be ruled by an authoritarian mob that has no problem with using discredited statistics to spread terror amongst the population and has little respect for freedom.

The saddest aspect of all of this is that there are shelves full of books about societies that have gone down this pathway and none of them contain any happy endings.  To illustrate this I’ll relay a conversation I had with someone when I mistakenly opened my local community Facebook page and made the grave error of contributing to a thread.

I had shared a video that explained the methodological and statistical errors made by the Imperial College team hoping that people might take an interest and at least dispel some of the fear that they are labouring under. How wrong I was.

First came the jibes and the ‘conspiracy nutter’ slurs.. fine – I’m well used to them but then this.

‘I can’t be bothered watching a 40 minute video – just tell me what it means’

So in the midst of the lockdown even someone with plenty of time on their hands just wants everything reduced to a series of factoids.  Even if I could distil the statistical and epidemiological arguments down to a few lines they would sound no more credible than the government’s fantasies. 

And this is my point, we have, through the mechanisms of easy tech, TikTok and JustEat become consumers of soundbites without the critical skills to interrogate the narratives and lacking the will to delve behind the headlines and extract the truth.
