Drakeford Government gives ‘free bus and train transport’ to asylum seekers

A  programme in Wales is offering free bus and train transport to asylum seekers during the months of February and March. Those behind the programme hope it will become a permanent feature in Wales.

Asylum seekers, who have not yet received refugee status, are given an allowance of £39.63 per week and free accommodation. Many are said to also work in the black economy for additional income.

In 2019 the devolved Welsh government announced a plan to make Wales the world’s first ‘Nation of Sanctuary’ for refugees, offering counselling and integration efforts to people from the day they arrive.
