Several of staff that currently work on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime chat show will be replaced as a result of an investigation uncovering “deficiencies” in “the show’s day-to-day management”. An inquiry was started after a story began to circulate which contained claims from employees of racism and intimidation on the show.
In the story, the accusers claimed that the environment around the show was toxic and is “dominated by fear”. Ellen DeGeneres responded via an email to staff that she was “committed to ensuring this does not happen again”. She also said: “We all have to be more mindful about the way our words and actions affect others, and I’m glad the issues at our show were brought to my attention”.
Several current and former employees at the show have said that they had been sacked after attending medical appointments and family funerals. Other allegations state that staff are instructed not to speak to DeGeneres if they see her around the office.
Further accusations are that head writer and executive producer Kevin Leman made a number of inappropriate sexual comments towards junior employees. Mr Leman has issued a statement that categorically denies “any kind of sexual impropriety”.
The Production company of the show, WarnerMedia has now said that “several staffing changes” would take place as a result of the investigation. Ms DeGeneres did not initially respond to the accusations and was understood to be waiting for the WarnerMedia investigation to conclude.
