Reports are emerging that the funding that French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Bastille Day is will be subject to if France can strike a financial deal with fellow EU member states later this week.
The French President is set to rely on EU funding to help France recover from the coronavirus pandemic. Emmanuel Macron announced a considerable £90billion package to aid the French national recovery plan this week. However, the new French prime minister Jean Castex admitted on Wednesday that this will be funded out of Brussels.
In addition to this Euronews’ Analise Borges has highlighted Mr Macron’s desperation to secure a deal at the EU summit this weekend. She said: “Where is all this money going to come from? Well, Castex has said the answer is not austerity. He said that this will be an investment in the country that will be backed by Europe. So that highlights the importance of a deal being reached between EU countries this weekend because that will have an impact on this new government here in France and their ability to put this plan into action”.
However, this money has been pledged the money before a deal has even struck between EU members. Doubts are growing as to whether a deal will even be agreed at this weekend’s special summit. The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said he is pessimistic about the chances of reaching a deal over the proposed European Recovery Fund which will start this Friday. Mr Rutte had told the Dutch Parliament: “The responses behind the scenes on our proposals do not make me hopeful about the chances to reach a deal”.
