The England cricket team return to actions next week, and they will join the West Indies in wearing the Black Lives Matter logo on their shirts throughout the test series. The decision was taken by the England and Wales Cricket Board and has been endorsed by the normal test captain Joe Root and his stand-in Ben Stokes who will captain the side next week due to Joe Root’s injury.
The chief executive of the ECB is Tom Harrison and he has stated that this gesture showed support for “progress and societal change” and refuted that it was a way of supporting any wider political aims. The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) code of conduct bans any clothing or equipment that has any political or religious messaging on it.
This is unless the two competing nations boards as well as the ICC agree dispensation. On this occasion, all three of the bodies concerned agreed that this was appropriate in this situation. Mr Harrison- the ECB’s chief executive has said: “This moment is about unity. We are proud that our players will stand alongside those from the West Indies and wear a logo that embodies that philosophy. It is fitting that they do so in solidarity with athletes from the football world who wore it first”.
The actor Laurence Fox referenced the news and the BLM UK tweet accused of anti-Semitism when he stated via Twitter “It’s surreal that in 2020 taking a stand against #Antisemitism involves having to not watch your favourite sports. @englandcricket @F1”.
