The leader of the Liberal Democrats in the European parliament (until Friday) has taken to Twitter to ask people to Caroline Voaden “make sure the EU anthem is No. 1 on January 31st. Buy and download now! Andre Rieu with the Johann Strauss Orchestra is the version you want: Ode To Joy (Final Movement From Symphony No.9, Op.125 / Live) –”. This song is played at all official EU occasions. 

This is not the first time that the song named “Ode To Joy” has been used at the centre of an argument. Last year the Brexit party MEP’s caused a stir when they collectively turned there backs in the European parliament whilst the song was being played. At the time Nigel Farage stated, “I’m not showing respect for foreign anthems that have been forced upon us,”. He felt that the anthem is a sign of a European nation being forced onto its members. Mr Farage also said that his MEP’s turned there backs “not just because we reject the concept of a nation called the European Union, but because nobody else in the whole of the rest of Europe had been asked whether that is what they want”. 

The lack of consultation with member states citizens is a common theme with the EU. “Ode To Joy” was reportedly Adolf Hitler’s favourite piece of music and Alt News Media reported last year that “in the Nazi concentration camps, musicians were forced to play it by camp guards ahead of executions”. Some would question the choice of song which has been used such horrific acts. Ms Voaden has also been complaining about not being an MEP as of Friday.
