THE EUROPEAN UNION has been forced to defend its Common Fisheries Policy under the pressure of growing criticism from the UK. However, the EU is now having to rebuke more and more criticism of the policy and has been described as a “failure”. The EU has long been accused of allowing overfishing and allowing severe impacts on member states despite promising to implement safeguards.
As part of a consultation launched by the Commission on fishing opportunities in 2019. As part of this various groups have partaken in a damning attack on the EU’s handling of overfishing. The ‘Our Fish’ programme director Rebecca Hubbard has accused the EU in The Parliament Magazine of “playing down” the ravaging of fish stocks. Ms Hubbard said, “Our Fish is surprised and disappointed to find that the Commission is playing down the continued overfishing in EU waters, while also diluting ambition to rebuild all fish stocks by 2020, as required by EU fisheries law”.
The EU is still defending the Common Fisheries Policy and has even demanded the UK keep giving the 27 member states access to its waters. Michel Barnier has even warned Britain that without access to British fishing grounds, the EU will deny the UK access to European markets. Ms Hubbard called on the EU to make changes to its approach, but also accused the bloc of lack of action because it had accepted failure. She said: “While some progress has been made, the communication from the Commission reads too much like an apology for anticipated failure. This is not acceptable. It is critical that the ambition of the reformed CFP is not lost as a result of the short-term challenges, or complacency, of implementation”.
Michel Barnier may be better advised on strengthening the policy with his 27 states, as of December rather than pursuing Britain on this issue, in an issue Prime Minister Boris Johnson appears to be standing firm on up to this point.
