Today Nigel Farage is officially launching The Brexit Party with a slew of mainstream media interviews and a rally at The Birmingham International Conference Centre on Saturday where he says that he will be introducing a range of ‘quality’ ‘business focused’ candidates.

However it has immediately resulted in controversy with a slanging match ensuing between both Gerard Batten and Nigel Farage over everything from calibre of candidates to Islam.

Radio 4 tweeted out this morning: UKIP has allowed the far-right to “effectively take over” but the Brexit Party will be “deeply intolerant of all intolerance” says @Nigel_Farage, despite the party’s former leader already having quit over accusations of Islamophobia

During his interviews as well this morning Farage was asked the question on what The Brexit Party’s position on Islam was and he replied that they would not be talking about it and did not have one. Farage has accused UKIP of being taken over by the ‘far-right’ which was an accusation he faced throughout his numerous tenures as UKIP leader.

Batten responded by saying The Brexit Party is just an electoral vehicle for Farage and a ‘Tory/Establishment’ safety valve.

Meanwhile the majority of comments on social media appear to still seek a form of consensus between the two parties. A study by grassroots campaign UK Unity has shown how the EU Elections are not fought on PR but rather a form of PR known as the D’ Hondt system. Studies have proven that if smaller parties on the same agenda stand against each other then the vote is merely cannibalised.

Farage claims his aim is to cause ‘a revolution within British Politics’ but some have argued whether he and his new party have the appeal to reach the vaste swathes of electorate currently voting both Conservative and Labour.

There have also been murmurings of discontent from within both UKIP and The Brexit Party about the manner in which candidates have been selected centrally with no input from members.

Unity News Opinion- Both Gerard Batten & Nigel Farage have strong loyal supporter bases but they risk alienating the wider public with this very public spat. The majority of the 17.4 million Brexit voters are merely looking to be heard and listened to. Divisions on the Brexit side during elections are not helpful in achieving these aims.
