The leader of the Brexit party Nigel Farage has spoken out in support of President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK on Monday, talking of the “hand of friendship” extended between the two nations. Mr Farage went onto suggest that had Mr Trump overseen the Brexit negotiations, they would have been more successful.
Mr Farage noted in a tweet on Monday morning: “As Trump arrives in the UK for his 3-day visit, he comes offering a trade deal if we need one, but also American’s hand of friendship. As the democratically elected leader of the free world, we should extend to him a welcome that befits the status of his office & great country”.
These sentiments were offered by many in the Conservative party including Rory Stewart during a frank interview with Nick Ferrari on Monday morning.
Mr Trump landed at Stansted just after 9AM. Mr Trump is only the third US President to be afforded a state visit, to an estimated tune of roughly £20 million. However, what has gone under the radar of large portions of the mainstream media, is that Mr Trump’s visit coincides with the 75-year commemoration of the D-Day beach landings towards the second world war, when 1 million US service personnel were stationed in the United Kingdom
Mr Trump has suggested many times that he is pleased at the prospect of a trade deal with the United Kingdom, but also said he was looking to extend American’s hand of friendship. Many have suggested that as 45th elected President of the United States of America, Britain should be offering its hand back.
President Trump and Nigel Farage are understood to be personal friends, with Mr Farage a frequent updater to the President on the lack of progress the British government is making on Brexit. President Trump suggested prior to his state visit that Farage should have been a member of the Brexit negotiating team. He said: “I think it is a mistake. He (Farage) has a lot to offer. He is a very smart person. They won’t bring him in. Think how well they would do if they did. They just haven’t figured that out yet.”
Donald Trump, who donated his presidential salary to charity, has pulled no punches in suggesting that he wants Brexit to happen. He is a keen believer in Britain returning its sovereignty and being able to do trade deals with the rest the world. Whilst Donald Trump has drawn his criticism for his record on global warming as president. This has not deterred Price Charles who is a keen climate change activist from sharing a dinner on Monday evening with Mr Trump. Many have suggested Charles is keen to debate this issue with Mr Trump, unlike certain other key figures in Britain.
