The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis has stated that he will issue an executive order that will ban local governments and businesses from requiring “vaccine passports” as proof that customers have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.
A bill has also been approved by the Legislature that would bar COVID-related lawsuits from being brought against businesses that have made efforts to comply with guidelines that are meant to stop the spread of the virus.
Governor DeSantis has previously spoken out against “vaccine passports” and has now said he would take the additional step of forbidding businesses from refusing to serve people who can’t prove they have been vaccinated. He has said: “It’s completely unacceptable for either the government or the private sector to impose upon you the requirement that you show proof of vaccine to just simply participate in normal society”.
The governor has rejected mask mandates. Florida’s economy has also been reopened in a move that was deemed controversial at the time. However, as of Sunday the 4th of April the state of Florida has reported 2,044,005 coronavirus cases and 33,819 deaths. Governor DeSantis has called the allowing of said allowing governments and businesses to require proof of vaccinations would be “an unprecedented expansion” of both the state and private power.
