The best friend of the fiancée to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been awarded an official paid role at the Home Office without it ever actually being advertised. The Home Office confirmed back in October that Nimco Ali had been made an adviser on tackling violence against women and girls. This Government role, for which she is paid £350 a day, was not advertised through any competitive application process.
The appointment has raised questions regarding issues on the creation of jobs for cronies because to many it may appear that this job was created for Miss Ali who is the godmother to Miss Symonds’ son with the Prime Minister. UNN’s Oliver Down understands that, Ali who is 38 who has sought to be Tory mayoral candidate in London and was given the job to ‘help shape our strategy to better target perpetrators and support victims of these crimes’.
It has been revealed, via freedom of information request, that the role was granted via ‘a direct appointment process’ which was ‘made without open competition’ or the job even being advertised. The Home Office has reacted to these developments by insisting that the procedure was ‘appropriate for short-term advisory roles, for example to lead a Government review or to champion a specific subject area’. It went on to add: ‘As this is a direct appointment, the role was not advertised and was not offered to anyone other than Miss Ali’.
