People in Scotland are being ‘frightened into silence’ by the SNP, says historian Neil Oliver

British historian Neil Oliver has slammed the SNP saying there is a pervasive atmosphere in Scotland of people being frightened into silence.

Mr Oliver speaking on TalkRadio with Mike Graham slammed the SNPs plans for a new proposed hate crime law.

The historian claimed that there is a pervasive atmosphere in Scotland frightening people into silence.

Mr Oliver said on the proposed legislation: “I Think to be contemplating stifling debate and discourse in Scotland at such a time – at a time when more than ever before we seem to need to be able to discuss things and express our concerns and air our anxieties for fear that otherwise, they will turn poisonous in the dark and in the silence.”

He continued: “To contemplate going into a future where it’s going to be even harder to talk and people will be… up here there is a pervasive atmosphere of people being frightened into silence, now you could argue until you were blue in the face about whether that is the intention or not of the proposed legislation but it undeniable that that is the way in which it is being received here in many quarters.

“The people are increasingly in my part of the world feeling that the safest option is just to keep your head down, keep your mouth shut, keep your thoughts to yourself for fear that now where previously it was just bringing down the hate of the mob and the Twitter mob, now it could be a knock at the door and you could find yourself on the wrong side of the law.”

Neil Oliver has joined growing and mounting criticism of the Scottish government’s proposed Hate Crime Bill over its feared impact on freedom of speech.

If passed, the legislation would update the list of characteristics, such as race, sexuality and age, protected under hate crimes and provide for new “stirring up” of hatred offences that would apply to all characteristics.
