Gary Lineker apologises after being caught shopping without face mask blaming his ‘old age’

The Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has been caught shopping in his local Marks & Spencer without a mask on but has blamed this mishap on his “old age”. The BBC presenter and former England footballer was pictured while shopping at the supermarket in Barnes, South West London without covering his face with a mask, as required to do by law. 

Lineker has attempted to explain the incident by saying that he quickly realised his mistake and hastily put on a face covering when other shoppers “gave him daggers”. Lineker has come in for considerable ridicule on social media as a result of this incident as he had previously taken a selfie outside the same branch wearing a mask with the caption: “I’m taking no chances.”. 

Last night Lineker tweeted an apology for the incident, saying: “In my old age, I went into a store and forgot to put my mask on. Was wondering why people were giving me daggers. Realised after a couple of minutes and hastily put it on. Felt awful and embarrassed. Apologies to those present.”. 

Following this apology, Lineker was slammed by Susan Hall who is the leader of the GLA Conservatives. She tweeted out the picture with the caption: “Do as I say, not as I do …”. 

The former England striker has been incredibly vocal around the importance of wearing masks. On the 14th of July he tweeted: “Why would anyone object to wearing a mask in a shop? Not exactly a hardship. What a country of snowflakes we’ve become.”. 

A shopper who took the picture has been quoted as saying: “If it was anyone else I wouldn’t mind so much. But it’s frustrating for someone who tries to take the moral high ground as much as he does.”
