Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has been one of the most outspoken celebrities against the democratic vote of 2016 hwoever he know appears to have backtracked massively on this.

Speaking to TalkRADIO, Lineker claimed he only decided to get involved in politics when he realised “lies” had been told by politicians in the lead up to the Brexit referendum. Lineker said he was torn about whether to come out as a Remainer and admitted he might have made the wrong call when he decided to announce he voted in favour of the UK remaining in the EU.

So I gave my opinion on that. But I never got involved in elections. I tweet a bit about politics because I’m interested in it but nobody knows who I voted for.

Lineker was then pushed on whether he though the battle to remain in the EU was now over to which he replied:

Yeah, I’m kind of like that – which is how I actually was after the original referendum. But then when it became clear about the lies that were told, that’s the only reason I got involved.

But they can own it now and get on with it. Let’s hope it works.
