Following the announcement that Sir Kim Darroch has resigned, many have turned their attention to who will be the next UK ambassador to the US. Whilst the bookie’s frontrunner is Michael Tatum who was the deputy to Sir Kim, as well as Nigel Farage, rumours have begun to circle about George Osborne who was, of course, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Sir Kim Darroch, who served as Her Majesty’s Permanent Representative to the EU until 2012, before his role as US ambassador, was due to be in post till the end of the year. However, following the leak which saw Sir Kim described as a “pompous fool” by Donald Trump and expelled from the White House his position became untenable leaving a vacancy in the Foreign Office’s most prominent overseas role.
One reason the rumours have arisen was due to a tweet by Mr Osborne’s former chief of staff Rupert Harrison stating “UK ambassador to the US and managing director of the IMF are both jobs that are based in Washington DC. Just saying.” It has been widely reported that George Osborne wants to head the IMF in Washington.
However, at first glance, Mr Osborne would not seem a palatable candidate to many having campaigned for remain in 2016 before going off to become editor of the Evening Standard. However, the third favourite with the bookies is Olly Robbins who would seemingly be even more unpalatable.
When analysing the outside prospect of Mr Osborne landing this prestigious role. Some would point to the fact that his newspaper has publicly backed Boris Johnson. As well as the fact that many of his close allies such as Matt Hancock and Sajid Javid look likely to land roles in a Boris Johnson cabinet. Should, as expected Boris Johnson become Britain’s prime minister stranger things have happened in recent times than George Osborne becoming the new UK ambassador to the US.
