The Queen intimated her backing for EU integration at a historic meeting with German diplomats, a declassified account of a meeting shows that is set to raise questions over Queen Elizabeth’s views on the Brexit process.
A diplomatic cable written by Ambassador Rüdiger Freiherr von Wechmar after a meeting with Queen Elizabeth in 1988 says that the Queen stated in no uncertain terms “no doubt that the future of Britain lies in Europe”.
The ambassador spoke with Elizabeth II for a farewell meeting at the German embassy in London and relayed his conversation back to his government.
The account of the meeting, reported by German’s Der Spiegel outlet, sheds light on the private views of the monarch, who has made an effort to keep out of politics throughout her reign including in the Brexit debate. There have been mixed reports on the Queen’s official take on matters with some arguing she believes in Brexit whilst others added she wore a European Style outfit at the opening of Parliament in a nod to the EU stars.
Prince Charles made a speech recently in Germany where he reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Europe. Others were annoyed at the Queen for not breaking Royal protocol in intervening to ensure Brexit took place with arguments that she is committing perjury by allowing herself to be a citizen of the EU which is forbidden under the UK’s unwritten constitution.
