On Wednesday, the infamous UK Supreme Court ruled that the Irish Republican Gerry Adams was illegally imprisoned without trial by the British government at the start of the 1970s. In addition to this, the court also quashed Mr Adams’ two convictions for attempting to escape the Maze prison in Belfast that housed prisoners during the troubles in Northern Ireland. All of this, as a result of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland at the time Willie Whitelaw not signing the appropriate paperwork at the correct time.
These developments have caused much feeling via social media and other sources. This morning, some Irish sources such as ‘Irish News’ are reporting that, as a result of yesterday’s ruling, the way has been paved for hundreds of similar cases to be brought.
Andrew Pierce has pulled no punches regarding his thoughts on this matter. He has described the ruling as ‘farcical’ and has added “ He did escape not once but twice the second time using a decoy to pretend it was him. He’s got away with it because there was a technicality. So What? He was banged up because he was thought to be an IRA suspect, an IRA terrorist and a danger to the public.
Mr Pierce expressed explicit criticism for the Supreme Court. He said: “The Supreme court has said the convictions are worthless. I think their ruling is even more so”. The decision to erase Gerry Adams’ criminal convictions are described in the Mail this morning as a ‘sick joke’, many this morning will be in agreement.
