Ghislaine Maxwell’s legal team have requested that a US judge dismisses the case against their client because the initial jury that heard her case was “too white”. Maxwell’s team has claimed there were not enough black and Hispanic jurors selected among the panel that ruled that decided she should stand trial.
Maxwell’s team’s accusations do not end there. She also has accused prosecutors of using both the current COVID-19 pandemic as well as the significant media and public interest surrounding the trial to give an excuse to move the trial away from Manhattan to White Plains, New York, where she believes that blacks and Hispanics were “significantly underrepresented”.
Maxwell believes it is her constitutional right to be tried at a hearing where the grand jurors are drawn from a “fair cross-section” society. She is also claiming that the indictment against her is “too vague” and should be thrown out.
In 2008 Jeffery Epstein agreed to plead guilty to Florida state prostitution charges and register as a sex offender and was jailed for 13 months. The plea deal averted possible life in prison on federal charges and he was not charged with sex trafficking at that time. Maxwell is now claiming that this agreement not to prosecute Epstein now shields her.
Maxwell, who is 59, is currently being held in a Brooklyn prison. She has been denied bail twice following her arrest on 2 July last year at her New Hampshire home. Her trial is scheduled for the 12th of July and she has plead not guilty to helping Epstein recruit and groom three girls for sex as well as lying about it under oath.
