Never underestimate the Machiavellian prowess of Michael Gove, and despite everything that is occurring at the moment never forget that in the top echelons of government there is a continual and ever present internecine conflict within the ranks of the cabinet.
Government has always been thus and during times of relative political stability where relatively minor issues can be used as levers to gain advantage over your competitors it has been largely a phenomenon which you have to scan the Sunday press and decode the double speak on the political talk shows to really grasp.
Mr Gove however is a real broad brush operator, sensing Priti Patel’s hesitancy to open the gates to Ukrainian refugees en-masse he simply went ahead and designed his own scheme in his typical Deus ex machina style. Again true to type, the scheme is packed with headline grabbing buzzwords and emotive language but like most things cobbled together on the fly, it doesn’t bare close inspection and in my belief reveals more about the true intentions of Mr Gove.
Foremost, the idea that people should be admitted for a three year period and given access to the labour market is hardly a crisis response. What can we infer from this measure? Is this because Mr Gove wants to import a demographic seen as hard working, right wing strivers? One has to also question what will happen after the three year period ends and these people have secured jobs, set up homes, given birth to children and in many other ways integrated into our society.
I have a soft spot for the Eastern Europeans, they form a sizeable wedge of my community, they are good people and if the Ukranian refugees are in genuine distress then they should be looked after, what I have an issue with is Mr Gove capitalising on the crisis by enticing people to set up home in this country into the medium term. Does Mr Gove think this war will last three years? Or does he take the view that Russia will gain control of Ukraine and the westernised population who oppose Moscow will simply become permanently displaced.
Remember that the Western Ukrainian population has been propagandised for decades now about how they are really Europeans and that all the benefits of a western culture are just a few diplomatic steps away. Sadly these promises are never kept by the west, the EU sees Ukraine as just another net beneficiary state and although they play the mood music of integration the political will to bring Ukraine into the fold seems lacking.
All of this makes Mr Gove’s move appear all the more cynical – people with hopes and dreams of an existence in the west are now being given the chance to grasp the reality and the conflict makes the decision instantaneous.
The Ukraine has been a geopolitical pawn for decades, it has become a nexus for the laundering of dirty western money and a place where anything can be done as long as someone can pay. If you need a biological research centre then just show them the cash and you can build one – no questions.
The war rolls on – its intensity and real victims vary depending on which media you read, I believe very little of it but one thing is certain, cynical and calculating people will exploit any crisis for their own gain and this crisis is absolutely no different to the last, and we saw how ‘real’ that one was…
