Tommy Robinson Verdict-What is the truth?

Since the announcement of the verdict in the trial of Tommy Robinson, the subject has at times been trending number one on Twitter with everyone jumping in to have their say. Tommy of course was tried under his real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and announced after the verdict that he was convicted “for who I am, not what I have done”.

Before we start it is important to state my opinion on all of this because it is so difficult to get to the bottom of things. When Tommy was jailed last year we fully supported the campaign to free him as the manner in which he was jailed was a disgrace. Since then we have always tried to report fairly on him and some of the headlines over the last few days from the mainstream media have been nothing short of despicable. It is my opinion Tommy should not do any more jail time for this and if he his jailed a whirlwind will be reaped by the state.

Sky News said in one headline: ‘I do love my job’: Parking Warden puts ticket on Tommy Robinson support bus. Meanwhile, they all led with Tommy being labelled as ‘reckless’ the other day and Tommy showed this himself on his Telegram Channel with a simple Google search. Let us now look in detail at what he has been found guilty of.

Mr Robinson was found guilty of interfering with the trial of a sexual grooming gang at Leeds Crown Court in May 2018. Two High Court judges found his conduct “amounted to a serious interference with the administration of justice”.  They ruled that he had committed contempt by breaking reporting restrictions.

His Defence team argued that he was not aware of a reporting restriction and asked officials if it was still in place to which they did not know the answer. On footage from the livestream, Tommy can be heard saying there is a reporting restriction in place and he has to watch what he says.

One of the senior judges, Dame Victoria Sharp, said the court will consider what penalty to impose for the contempt – which carries a maximum penalty of two years – and give full reasons for the decision at a later date.

She said Robinson breached the reporting restriction imposed on the trial by live-streaming a video from outside the public entrance to the court and by “aggressively confronting and filming” some of the defendants.

The judge said the content of the video “gave rise to a substantial risk that the course of justice, in that case, would be seriously impeded” and the confrontation of the defendants was in direct interference with the course of justice.
