September annually brings about party conference season which allows political parties an opportunity to sure up policy and deals with party constitutional matters. This year the Liberal Democrats have invited a guest speaker, Guy Verhofstadt. Mr Verhofstadt, a Belgian national spoke of “the world order of tomorrow is not a world order based on nation-states or countries. It is a world order that is based on empires”. It would be fair to assume that Mr Verhofstadt sees the European Union as an empire.
This move by Mr Verhofstadt to involve himself in British politics so publicly has alarmed many Brexiteers. A significant cause that lead to Brexit was undoubtedly the move that the EU made when it evolved from a constructive European community to an overbearing, undemocratic body that acts as if people have ceased to identify with their national communities and are already loyal EU nationals, these people in Brussels still are not getting it.

A succession of EU chiefs have presided over European courts repeatedly overstepping and overbearing nation-states. One example of this is the Vinter v The United Kingdom case, in 2013 the European Court of Human rights declared that mandatory life sentences for convicted murderers were a violation of human rights. As a result of the vacancy of an appeals process, the ruling the UK to compliance. This was despite there being almost unity in the House of Commons against this decision.
The Liberal Democrats have launched an aggressive plan in London to pick up seats all over the capital, which is a remain stronghold. In spite of this, the fear at a General election must be by its very title it is conducted on a plurality of general issues. Some have also suggested that they may fare better at the polls if they looked to appeal to British citizens at the expense of EU nationals all over the continent. However, this seems extremely unlikely.
