Hairdresser who remained open faces court over failure to pay £17,000 Covid fines

It has emerged that a hairdresser who has failed to pay £17,000 in fines for Covid rule breaches is being taking to court. Sinead Quinn has a salon near Bradford, could face an unlimited fine if she is found guilty at a hearing.

Kirklees Council has stated that Ms Quinn had not paid anything towards a number of multiple fixed penalty notices that were imposed on her last year for ignoring the lockdown restrictions. Ms Quinn was outspoken on social media, where she had previously said that she did not consent to or accept the fines.

Ms Quinn’s salon displayed a sign on the salon door which said the shop is “under the jurisdiction of common law”. This is in reference to the Magna Carta. Kirklees Council issued a number of fines, the first being a £1,000 on 9 November. Further fines have been issues subsequently. The first being for £2,000, then £4,000 and £10,000 after finding the shop open in breach of lockdown laws.

In addition to this, in November, Bradford magistrates granted Kirklees council an injunction which forced the salon to close. This was extended in February. A spokesperson for Kirklees Council has said: “We make no apologies for putting the health and safety of residents first. We are currently awaiting a court date, after submitting a prosecution case against Quinn for non-payment of fines after she repeatedly breached Covid-19 restrictions by opening and trading during lockdown. It’s still vital that we follow all the guidance in place to keep each other safe. Thankfully, the vast majority of businesses and residents are doing this, and we will take action against those who don’t”.
