The most senior civil servant in the Home Office has resigned and said he intends to sue the government for constructive dismissal.
Sir Philip Rutnam said there had been an orchestrated campaign against him.
There have been many accusations of a rift between him and Home Secretary Priti Patel, including allegations she mistreated officials which have been vigorously denied by the government.
Rutnam said he believed his experience was “extreme” but part of a “wider pattern” in government.
This comes days after the home secretary and Rutnam released a joint statement saying they were “deeply concerned” by various “false allegations” made about Ms Patel.
Rutnam has said in a statement:
In the last 10 days, I have been the target of a vicious and orchestrated briefing campaign.
It has been alleged that I have briefed the media against the home secretary.
This – along with many other claims – is completely false.
Priti Patel has faced massive blocks in order to try and get the Grooming Gang report published due to apparent attempts by the ‘deep state’ to block this. Likewise they have been against the tougher attitude to immigration being put forward by the government.
