Iceland delivery vans destroyed in ‘sickening’ attack

An hour after the Prime Minister put the nation onto ‘lockdown’ two Iceland delivery vans will have to be written off after being set on fire in Bristol. Disturbances broke out in the Southmead area of the City at around 9.30pm on Monday night. Whilst commenting on this incident Iceland said: “Police riot vans were called out and youths threw missiles at the police as they tried to disperse them. Later in the evening, the two home delivery vans parked outside our Southmead store were set alight and the fire brigade attended to put out the fire. The vans will both have to be written off. We believe this to an act of mindless vandalism rather than a targeted attack on Iceland.”

As an attempt to mitigate the effects of the attack Iceland has said it would bring in replacement vans to maintain the home delivery service in Southmead. However, it did add its entire van fleet was running at absolutely full capacity at the moment. The CEO of Iceland Richard Walker has been alerted to the incident and tweeted about the incident “It is shocking and distressing that anyone would act so callously to put vehicles out of service at precisely the time when they are most needed to deliver food to the most vulnerable people in our society”.

Avon and Somerset Police have also issued a statement that says the force is carrying out targeted patrols in Henbury and Southmead today after overnight incidents including arson and criminal damage. Patrolling officers came across the Iceland van fire while officers were flagged down by a member of the public over the damage to cars in an adjacent street.

The Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Mark Runacres said: “Just hours after the Prime Minister announced everyone in the country should stay home to save lives it is beyond belief anyone would be so reckless and thoughtless. Officers were already patrolling the area following recent instances of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and we’ll continue to do so. We put an order in place last night under ASB legislation to give officers extra powers to disperse groups and will continue to use these existing powers to tackle this problem. We believe that a group of teenagers were involved in these disturbances. I have one message for them, their parents and carers. Stay at home. Save lives.”

If anyone has any information regarding the incident, they should get in contact with the police immediately quoting reference 5220068263.
