A newsagent in Glasgow has been selling controversial antibody tests amid the coronavirus outbreak and has come under widespread condemnation. Mr Nadeem Anwar has stated that he has already sold 1000 boxes of the devices to a pharmacy chain. However, Mr Anwar has openly admitted that the tests are not 100 per cent accurate.
The shopkeeper also claims that he had 4000 boxes that he is selling for £750 each and in addition to this is waiting on a shipment of 9000 more to arrive from China. Mr Anwar said: “I like to be at the forefront or try to be ahead of the game whenever there’s a growing demand for things that could help the community or public in general. I’ve got friends and family high-up in the Biomedics and pharmaceuticals industry. I know a shopkeeper having these kits is weird but it’s business. I’m hardly making any money on these; the profit margin is small.”
The shopkeeper has claimed the devices, which according to the Daily Record appear to be made by Chinese pharma firm Yuno Diagnostics, are 92 per cent accurate. The UK Government has already assessed a number of home antibody testing kits and all have so far proved too inaccurate for use. The Department of Health has already said it would be asking for its money back after buying three million unusable home tests from China. However, Mr Anwar has said: “I don’t understand how I can get these antibody kits but the NHS can’t”.
The pharmaceuticals watchdog, the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has said Mr Anwar was illegally selling the kits and that it was working with partners to clamp down on what it is describing as “criminal activity”. Despite this Mr Anwar remains defiant, he said: “I have certificates to prove that my tests are legitimate if anyone in authority comes in and challenges me. The kits are CE and MHRA registered. I’m untouchable”.
