Developments are emerging from IRAQ which are highly significant. The parliament in IRAQ has voted to expel the US military from the country. Commentators and experts in the region such as Farnaz Fassihi have taken to twitter with the information “BREAKING; #Iraq parliament votes to expel US military from Iraq.
PM Abdul Mahdi said: “It’s time for American troops to leave.” Ms. Fassihi is in no doubt that this is significant adding that “I ran the WSJ’s Baghdad bureau for 4 years from invasion to civil war, never thought I’d see #Iraq parliament expel American military. Even #Soleimani couldn’t have dreamed this. #Iran”. The situation seems very serious indeed.
This is clearly a developing situation where it is extremely difficult to predict potential outcomes. The Hezbollah leader Hassan Nazrallah has stated his support for an “eye for eye” revenge attack against the US. This will not surprise many. However, questions will be asked around the future of the fight against ISIS in IRAQ in the context of the US military being expelled from IRAQ. This was supported by Ms Fassihi, she said on twitter “People cheering US military getting expelled, consider how ISIS threat in Iraq reverberates far outside its borders from terrorist attacks in EU to recruiting western cells & refugee crisis. This is not good. #Iraq #Soleimani”.

The effects of Donald Trump’s decision to assassinate are slowly becoming apparent. Michael Mcfaul is extremely concerned about events in the IRAQ parliament, he said: “It will be hard to “restore deterrence” if American soldiers must leave Iraq.” Alan Sked the respected professor has tweeted “The Iraqi Parliament has called for all foreign troops to leave their country. So, who will defend it? Its own army famously ran away when confronted by ISIS. The answer, of course, is the Iraqi militias controlled by Iran. But not to worry, Macron says he supports Iraqi sovereignty!” It is undoubted that the world is in precarious times.
