Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg has been handed a major promotion by Boris Johnson. He has been installed as the Leader of the House of Commons. His new role within the cabinet will see him oversee and set out the plans for the Government’s business in House of Commons as well as setting out the weekly schedule for Commons time. He will be in constant contact the speaker of the house Mr John Bercow.
The Independent have predicted “vicious scraps between the leader of the House of Commons and the Speaker of the House of Commons” this could well be an interesting dynamic to keep a gaze over. Mr Rees-Mogg, the MP for North East Somerset has replaced Mel Stride in his new position. Mr Stride was placed in this position only towards the end of May after Andrea Leadsom, who has been installed as business secretary, resigned in opposition to Theresa May’s so called withdrawal agreement.
Following the news on Wednesday evening Mr Rees-Mogg was interviewed by Robert Peston on ITV. He was firmly adamant when he explained Parliament had already made it the default legal position for Britain to leave the EU on October 31 irrespective of any future talks when article 50 was invoked back in March 2017.
He stated: “So, just for the status quo to be maintained means we leave without a deal unless a deal is passed. So, when people say the House of Commons is going to stop it, they are forgetting the House of Commons has already agreed to it.” In addition to this he also criticised faultfinders of Boris Johnson’s newly selected cabinet of failing to remember the pre-referendum position of some of Mr Johnson’s newly installed ministers. Mr Rees-Mogg stated “I think to characterise it as a sort of Vote Leave coup is a mistake and is forgetting that the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sajid Javid, moved from Home Secretary) and the International Trade Secretary (Liz Truss, moved from Chief Secretary to the Treasury) were both Remainers.”
However, there was certainly a mass culling over previous ministers, 17 ministers were dismissed over a five-hour period on Wednesday afternoon. One clear change was Andrea Leadsom who took over as business secretary. She took over from staunch Remainer Greg Clark who served Theresa May in this role for the whole of her premiership.
Whilst many have suggested a snap general election could be imminent, Jacob Rees-Mogg has rubbished such talks. He stated that “The question there for Conservatives is do they want to take the risk of Jeremy Corbyn, it is clearly not the policy of the Government to bring on a general election and it’s worth remembering since the Fixed Terms Parliament Act in 2011, the Prime Minister no longer has the ability to call a general election willy-nilly.” Two thirds of MP’s in the commons would have to vote against the government which sees unlikely without significant government whipping at the current time.
