Gavin Williamson stated The NHS is “ready and eager” to deliver the Covid vaccine to schoolchildren between the ages of 12 and 15.
The cabinet minister said he “hoped” the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) – the expert body advising the government on the programme – would soon recommend jabs for children under 16.
NHS organisations in England have been told to prepare for a possible extension of the Covid vaccination programme to all 12 to 15-year-olds.
But on 3rd September a bombshell was dropped upon the political class – the JCVI’s decision was not the one expected .…………
The assessment by the JCVI is that the health benefits from vaccination are marginally greater than the potential known harms. However, the margin of benefit is considered too small to support universal vaccination of healthy 12 to 15 year olds at this time.
They stated, for the vast majority of children, SARS-CoV-2 infection is asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and will resolve without treatment. Of the very few children aged 12 to 15 years who require hospitalisation, the majority have underlying health conditions.
There is evidence of an association between mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and myocarditis. The medium- to long-term effects are unknown and long-term follow-up is being conducted.
Given the very low risk of serious COVID-19 disease in otherwise healthy 12 to 15 year olds, considerations on the potential harms and benefits of vaccination are very finely balanced and a precautionary approach was agreed.
Professor Wei Shen Lim, Chair of COVID-19 Immunisation for the JCVI, said:
When deciding on childhood immunisations, the JCVI has consistently maintained that the main focus should be the benefits to children themselves, balanced against any potential harms to them from vaccination.
As longer-term data on potential adverse reactions accumulates, greater certainty may allow for a reconsideration of the benefits and harms. This data may not be available for several months.
Analysis
Refreshing to FINALLY see a risk/benefit analysis undertaken and the precautionary principle applied – something sadly lacking during the whole covid debarcle.
Somehow I have a feeling the powerful vested interests pushing this, will quickly overturn this decision– far too much time and political capital has already been expended. [have contracts been signed and “vaxxinators” recruited?]. If so what is the point of commissioning independent expert committees?
If Politicians overturn the JCVI’s decision this will validate what many of us have known for a long time – this has nothing to do with health or “following the science” – but everything to do with following a global political agenda.
Will this “bombshell” wake up more people – let’s hope so for our children’s sake…
