Imagine my dismay this morning when I looked out of the bedroom window. It was snowing. My immediate thought was that the government would close the country down. After all, it is known that the number of road deaths goes up when it snows and on years when there is sustained snow that there are more deaths than in other years. With trepidation, I tuned into BBC Radio 4—the voice of the nation—expecting the news that I would have to stay at home, that businesses would be closed, and that Christmas may be cancelled. But nothing about snow at all, no warnings that you were more likely to die if you went out on the road. It seemed that we were being allowed to carry on as normal. It was almost as if the government didn’t care.
On the other hand, something from which nobody has yet been reported to have died—the moronic variant of the coronavirus—is striking fear into the heart of the nation. Apparently 32 people have been identified with this new variant in the UK. That is a staggering 0.0000469% of the population; up from 0.00000439% at the weekend. More accurately, the government is striking fear into the heart of the nation. Mask mandates are back, and Dr Jenny Heartless, head of UK Health Security says we should be encouraged not to socialise over Christmas. The woman who discovered this variant has already told us it is mild and nothing to worry about and even the World Health Organisation—usually the vanguard of global panic over pandemics—is telling the world that it is being hysterical. But nobody seems to be listening and here in my hometown of Hull the local NHS has announced restrictions to visitors entering hospitals. I already have stories from previous restrictions about how this has adversely affected people in hospital who were, essentially, abandoned. Where the mask mandates are aimed at public transport and shops, my employer the University of Hull has announced a full mask up in corridors, offices and lecture rooms. It seems that we don’t need a virus or the government to ramp up the fear; here in Hull we are perfectly capable of doing it to ourselves.
Further afield the President of the E.U. Commission, Arse-ula von der Leyen, is using that which we should not be panicking about to suggest mandatory Covid vaccination across Europe. I would like to think ‘thank goodness we are out of Europe’ and, in many ways, I am thankful. But I have completely lost trust in the UK Government and simply don’t believe a word they say regarding the pandemic and can see them following suit. In my view, this is almost inevitable. This is nothing to do with preventing the spread of a virus but about mass vaccination, the ensuing requirement for vaccine passports and the extension of vaccine passport functionality into an increasing number of aspects of our lives. Conspiracy theories aside, I see no evidence to the contrary.
Those with eyes to see must acknowledge, as the severity of the coronavirus declines, as Covid vaccination is widespread (but demonstrably poor at halting the spread of the virus), and nothing appears to work to stop the virus from lockdowns to masks, that the world is now a worse place in which to live than it was a year ago or even a month ago. And it has little to do with Covid-19. Anyone in any doubt should ask the Australian aboriginals in the Northern territories, the unvaccinated (and even the vaccinated in Austria), older people in Greece and anyone who works in the hospitality industry in the UK. For those perverts who like to kiss absolute strangers at Christmas—mistletoe inspired or not—that has also been banned. Every cloud, I suppose!
