Joe Biden demands no border between the Republic of Ireland and UK

In the last 24 hours, Joe Biden has offered his thoughts on the Brexit process. Mr Biden has told a press pool in the US that he does not want to see a ‘guarded border’ between Ireland and the UK. Mr Biden has stated his insistence that the Northern Ireland’s peace deal is protected throughout the Brexit process. UNN’s Oliver Down understands that Mr Biden has replicated his public words in a call with Boris Johnson earlier this month.

The British government are still engaging in talks that seek to result in a trade deal with the European Union but insist they are willing to leave without one. Many have suggested that doing so could complicate arrangements around the UK’s Northern Irish border with Ireland.

Mr Biden told journalists in Wilmington, Delaware yesterday that no ‘hard border’ must occur. Biden said when asked what he would say to Brexit negotiators: ‘We do not want a guarded border’.

Mr Biden has, on a number of occasions, talked about the importance of his Irish heritage, stated prior to the US election that the UK must honour the 1998 agreement as it withdraws from the bloc. He also stated that this was essential for any UK-US trade deal to go ahead.

UNN’s Oliver Down understands that, in no stage of their political careers have Mr Johnson and Mr Biden ever met. It now seems extremely likely that the prime minister will have to work hard to maintain and foster the ‘special relationship’ between the UK and US.
