Brexit stalwart John Redwood has this morning come out on the attack against Rory Stewart over what he argues is Stewart’s inherent weakness on the Brexit Strategy. Stewart has been praised by a wide variety of mainstream media outlets for his ‘liberal’ and welcoming approach to politics. This has seen him do live-streams out and about in the UK where the majority of comments from Brexit supporters are in mockery of him.
Mr Redwood thundered against both Stewart and the other candidates by saying:
“Rory Stewart cannot understand what is wrong with the Withdrawal Treaty, rejected by 91% of the voters in the Euro election. It is an abject surrender, keeping us under EU laws, paying them huge sums, with no guarantee of an eventual clean exit. All but Dominic Raab last night wrongly suppose the Withdrawal Agreement can be renegotiated. Some even think the Withdrawal Treaty should be signed. That is why they did so badly in the first round vote.”
This comes as at a Press Conference today Stewart said he voted remain in 2016 and ruled out saying how he would vote in the future, but he is now working for a pragmatic Brexit. He does not want a second referendum and if there were one, he would have failed. He would go into that voting booth conscious of this failure. Stewart refused to say if he would vote leave or remain in a second referendum. Asked again how he would vote, he still refused to answer. But he goes on to say people do not appreciate how damaging a second referendum would be.
Front runner for the leadership race Boris Johnson has announced he has received the endorsement of former Met Commissioner Lord Hogan-Howe tweeting:
“I’m honoured to have the support of Bernard Hogan-Howe, the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Together, we cut crime by 20%, cut knife crime by 17% and halved the murder rate. As Mayor I kept my promises and delivered for everyone. Now I want to do the same for our country.”
